Firecracker Farm

Growers & purveyors of exquisite hot pepper products

Firecracker Farm is a small family-run business in Palm City, Florida that makes hot salt: sea salt infused with hot peppers, sold in a refillable stainless steel push grinder. People use it where they would reach for hot sauce, but it is dry, so the heat spreads through the whole plate instead of landing in one bite.

3.0 Founder

Alex Bonamarte

Alex Bonamarte grew up between Minneapolis and Paris. His father introduced him to super-hot peppers when he was ten. He studied at Parsons School of Design in Paris and has run HAAS/créa since 2008. HAAS is the web and application development firm responsible for the Official Times Square Ball app and website for the Time Square New Year's Eve enent since 2010. From 2009 to 2015 he and his wife Jackie owned and operated Shooting Kitchen, a commercial kitchen and daylight photography studio in New York whose clients included Food Network, Bon Appétit, Rachael Ray and Chobani.

The family moved to Palm City, Florida, where they grow the peppers, make Hot Salt and fill the grinders themselves. Firecracker Farm had no launch plan: the push grinder format was selected so Alex could carry the salt, and the product was discovered, passed hand to hand, one friend to another.

Ghost, Scorpion and Reaper peppers with their Scoville ratings and flavor notes

7.0 What we do not claim

What we do not claim

We farm and make everything the way we feed our own family (we eat what we cook, after all), but we don’t chase certifications. Hot Salt is not certified organic, so we don’t describe it as organic. We do not publish a Scoville rating for the finished salt; the figures we publish are for the three peppers, and Scoville measures peak pungency without describing flavor, onset or where heat is felt. The grinders are manufactured to our specification by a supplier; we fill them. The infusion process is not disclosed. A few grains can shed from the bottom of a push grinder carried loose, and the window can crack from a drop or over-tightening; both are replaced without questions.
